Whether you’re interested in child development or testing out the culinary arts, FACS has got your back! Jefferson offers several FACS classes that can further your knowledge in finance, home and kitchen skills, and even child and family development.
General and Advanced Foods are just the beginning. These classes offer fun projects throughout the year while building the skills you pick up in class. Jefferson’s food classes teach kitchen safety, basic home skills and maintenance, and nutrition. But the learning doesn’t end there. JHS also offers Child Development, a class you can take to gain life skills in health and guiding roles, along with hands-on learning about children’s growth from birth through adolescence. This course covers physical, social, and emotional milestones, as well as cognitive development. You also study major theories on the effects of environment and different parenting styles on children and learn the importance of safety, health, and guiding behavior in preparation for a career in education or caregiving.
Interested? Here’s another fun fact: Child Development is taught by Dawn Bonham, the Family and Consumer Sciences Department Head, who serves as one of the many resources you can turn to when you have questions about classes or education. “The impact of FACS is long-lasting. Students leave with a stronger understanding of themselves, their goals, and the skills needed to navigate adulthood,” exclaimed Mrs. Bonham.
Another FACS class offered at JHS is Interior Design, as well as Fashion Design. If you have a passion for self-expression through style or want to learn useful sewing skills, these classes will help you learn the principles of design. You also complete hands-on projects and practice what you learn about space planning, color theory, material selection, and more. Fashion Design is a class where you gain knowledge in 2D and 3D design, sketching, cutting, and sewing. Additionally, you explore fashion history, trends, and the cultural influences on clothing throughout the years.
So be sure to ask questions and take a dive into some of these FACS classes for your second semester or next year’s schedule!
