Classes are now finalizing their last units for the school year, and as a student who appreciates the creative aspect of life. If you have an interest in fashion and want to escape the academic side of school for a class period, I highly recommend Fashion Design as a potential class for you. Hands-on learning is a major part of this class, such as hand sewing and using a sewing machine, along with learning what kinds of materials are used for creative projects. And the best thing about it is that you don’t need to know everything about sewing; you can show up to class having no experience whatsoever and build your skills up from there.” I learned something I hadn’t before. I didn’t actually understand how to use a sewing machine, but now I have one of my own and a sewing table.” sophomore Alexis Verbeek explained.
Of course, learning something new means that everything won’t be perfect on the first try, but that’s the best thing about pursuing fashion design in school: you get the space and freedom to try new things, make mistakes, and grow. For the first large-scale sewing project, the class made a 9-square pillow. The skills learned in this class are taken beyond the classroom, which inspires independent projects at home using personal sewing machines. Like many electives, Fashion Design gives students the chance to explore new techniques and follow creative interests that spark their curiosity.
At the end of the semester, Fashion Design has a big final Project. Mrs. Sturm shares that every year she changes something to attempt to make it different for each class. Sturm focuses on repurposing and upcycling fabrics from clothing, as well as other items, into something you’ll be proud to wear. “I had chosen to make a denim tote bag from a pair of jeans I never wore.” Verbeek shared. It’s a great life skill to know how to fix up unused items from your closet and use them for a different purpose. “I like upcycling things now, especially since I have a machine of my own. I have a ton of unflattering jeans. I plan to turn into vests, skirts, and more during the summer.” Verbeek shared.
If you’re in an elective you’re not too sure about, and you want to find a new hobby or learn new skills. Fashion design will encourage you to accomplish that and more.
