A new movie reached theaters on March 20th: Project Hail Mary. The title can be slightly deceiving if you haven’t read the book like me, but the movie is based on the book about a space mission. Movie critic reviews have rated it 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and 96% on the Popcornmeter. It’s filled with moments that make you tear up from being on the edge of your seat, biting your tongue, but that’s what makes a movie good.
If you haven’t seen the movie yet, this is a spoiler warning. Project Hail Mary stars the main character Ryland (Ryan Gosling), waking up in space alone amongst his deceased crew members. It entails his journey throughout space and gives flashes into the present and past. The movie takes you on a spiraling rollercoaster of emotions, and the cinematic setting of the movie theater ties it together.
In the 2 hour and 36 minute movie, there is 0 greenscreen for the entire film. They used CGI for a lot of the movie, given that there is a fictional alien character who is played for a good portion. The interior of the ship on set was made using real materials to reflect a more realistic look and give the true outer space look. Ryan Gosling spent 5 years bringing the book to life, working to perfect the role and portray real emotions as if it were really happening.
When asked about her thoughts on the movie, she responded “The movie was really good and made me cry, I 10/10 recommend.”, Haley Shawd (11) replied.
A lot of people have biased opinions saying they are trying to make a spinoff of Interstellar or the Martian with similar plots about traveling on space missions. This caused some people to not want to see it and look down on it as just another sci-fi movie out there. There is only one way to find out, you have to go see it for yourself.
