Practicing perfection, the Jefferson Show Choir has been running late nights and enduring strenuous rehearsals to prepare for their season and is ready for their first performance on preview night, Saturday, December 20, after hours of preparation. Legacy’s jazz-like theme has made the performance full of spunky songs and groovy ballads—and that’s just Legacy! The two show choir groups are Legacy and Revelry. One group, Legacy, is a show choir made up of boys and girls and has a full bass-to-soprano range in their songs, while Revelry is an all-female show choir.
The show choir performances have a theme to create a story within their show and consist of two opening songs, a ballad that represents the halfway point or climax, and two to four closing songs that end the performance. Revelry’s theme this year is “space cowgirl,” and they started off preview night in dark, sparkly dresses. After their ballad, they do a costume change into a bright sequin romper, where the mood of their show becomes even more energetic.
Legacy’s performance starts with the girls in black, floor-length sparkly gowns and the boys in classy white tailcoats. Their first song, “I Could Have Danced All Night,” sets a rhythm-and-blues mood at the beginning of the show before a more jazz theme approaches after their first costume change, where the floor-length gowns are rip-off costumes that reveal red, sparkly flapper dresses underneath. Their final costume change features green and blue hoodies for the girls and blazers over white T-shirts for the boys, ending their performance with energy.
Their performances at preview night were just a peek at the perfection they’re working toward and were shown to parents, friends, and teachers. “I am one out of the five girls who made the varsity show choir, Legacy, freshman year. Since then, I have enjoyed how every show is different and better than the last. Legacy is much more than dancing and singing. I have made some lifetime friends along my four years in this group,” says senior Legacy member Katarina Jeffris.
Their first competition, the Cavalier Classic, is this weekend at Jefferson.
