Because of the ongoing war in Iran, gas prices have been going up all over the country, and a lot of people in our community are feeling the impact. For students, parents, and anyone who has to drive every day, paying for gas is becoming a bigger problem.
Over the past several months, many people have noticed that the cost of filling up their cars has been rising. Even small price changes can add up over time. What used to be a $40 fill-up is now $60, or more, depending on the vehicle. Students who drive to get them to school, work, and practices are really feeling the effects. “I find myself wanting to carpool way more now than I used to due to the gas prices,” said junior Hailey Shawd.
Right now, the average gas price per gallon in Sioux Falls is $3.65 for regular and $4.50 for premium. A month ago, regular gas was $2.90. Gas is what many students have to pay for themselves, especially those with jobs who are spending more and more of their paycheck just on gas, leaving less money for other things. Those driving to school from out of town, like Harrisburg, Brandon, and Tea, are feeling the impact even more. “ I come from Tea every day, and I noticed I spend way more on gas now than I did a few months ago,” says Junior Braylin Dupert. Students with delivery jobs that require driving are also being affected. “I drive DoorDash, and it feels like the money I make from that just goes straight to gas, so in the end it feels like a waste of time,” shares Senior Ersin Suljic.
Overall, gas prices are becoming more of an issue than people think. As they continue to change, many are having to adjust their driving and spending habits, making things feel tighter financially for most.
