Hearing the stories behind tattoos is already so interesting, but hearing your teacher’s stories is even more interesting. Tattoos can often be seen as unprofessional or inappropriate in the teacher setting, but more people have them than you might think. Tattoos are also often used to express yourself and show your interests in things throughout life. Hear the stories of staff among us on how and why they got their tattoos.
Many people say their tattoos carry deep personal meanings and can represent family members, important life events, culture, and growth. College Career advisor, Kate Telkamp, said, “So I adopted my kids out of foster care and it was a long and scary process, so once they were finally adopted I wanted something to signify our family. So the flowers are our birth flowers and then a bible verse.” Her story is just one of many that the staff here at JHS have.
Another story behind a tattoo comes from JHS teacher, Dawn Bonham, who says, “ It’s the precious moments Jesus loves you, for my stillborn daughter. It’s a tattoo for her in memory of her. Her name is Haley.”
You will also notice that amongst staff, students also have tattoos that are creative and unique. Staff and students can use this thing they share in common and create a connection and share their stories either exciting or more of a dark story.
The next time you see a cool or interesting tattoo, ask your teacher what the meaning is. You’ll find that there is more to it than just a drawing or a picture, and you may be surprised who does and who doesn’t have tattoos!
