An act of kindness can change someone’s life without you even knowing. There can be times when you feel there’s no hope, especially if you’ve been spending most of your time lying in bed at home. The National Honor Society recently wrote letters of encouragement and hope during 4B to patients at Sanford Hospital to give them a boost in positivity. This activity was fun and welcoming to all non-NHS members, leading to bonding over letter-writing. “Knowing I’m making their day better by taking a little bit of time to make them a card was my favorite part,” said NHS student Adelynn Wallace. These students didn’t just write letters about getting well, but words to lift up their spirits. Students wrote compassionate phrases such as “You are strong,” ”You are loved,” and much more. Not only was the classroom filled with letters and messages, but also laughter. This is a memory that will stick with all, not just the members and friends, but the patients who received their letters.
Taking at least five minutes to write what you would think is a simple letter could really turn someone’s frown upside down. Having the opportunity to make someone feel good about themselves is an unforgettable feeling. I challenge you to make a difference by writing at least one letter to someone about what you love about them.
