It’s that time of year again! It’s time for big tests that help with college. Many sophomores and juniors are signing up for something called the ACT. But what is the ACT? What is it used for? Most importantly, how to prepare?
The ACT is one of two popular standardized tests used in the college admissions process. The test challenges students’ understanding of high school English, reading, math, and science, with an optional writing test that doesn’t affect the overall score. The ACT is scored on a scale from 1 to 36, with the average being about 19.4 in 2024.
Many colleges and universities will use an ACT score to give students additional scholarship money if they choose to go that route. For example, South Dakota State University gives students who have a 3.5 GPA and a 24 on the ACT a $2,000 scholarship for their first year.
Not only do colleges use an ACT score, but so do certain scholarships. The South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship offers up to $7,500 if a student gets a 24 or higher and completes different coursework requirements before graduation.
There are a variety of ways to prepare for the ACT. JHS offers an ACT Prep Course that students can take for $100, which also includes an ACT textbook that can be used for studying. However, the prep course does not cover the cost of the test. That is a separate part. The prices of the test range from $69 to $94, if you choose to add on the writing portion.
One thing that many students who have taken the test recommend is using the week before to study. The ACT textbook offers practice tests for kids to take. So use those tests and get used to seeing the format of the ACT.
Mr. Matzke, a counselor here at JHS, recommends the ACT prep course. “Anyone who is taking the ACT should prepare, you are paying money and giving up your time, you might as well be prepared. What I like about our prep course is it’s taught by our teachers and in our building. There is a sense of comfort but also accountability.”
If you’re still up in the air, there are other tests you can take. Mr. Matzke, and other counselors, recommend taking the Accuplacer or ASVAB. Matzke stated, “Taking a post-secondary test like an ACT is beneficial to see where your skills are at the moment. If you are nervous about taking the ACT, start smaller with the Accuplacer or ASVAB. You can work out some nerves, while gaining college readiness, and career insight.”
In conclusion, the ACT is a really good test to take if you’re going to college. Many more scholarships and opportunities are available to you.
