The list of activities at our own Jefferson High School is immense, and indeed, growing by the day. One highlight of a recent event was the JHS Quiz Bowl team taking home the silver at the Harrisburg competition on January 20th. This was the second competition of the season. Future competitions include February 10th in Madison and March 3rd at O’Gorman. The quiz bowl team was started back in 2022 when the current captain, Aayush Mohapatra was a sophomore. When I asked him how he became captain, he stated, “I kinda just became the de facto captain after they (the seniors in quiz bowl) all left.” The team was started by Tesfamichael Assefa and Mrs. Jensen, who remains the current advisor. According to Mrs. Jensen quiz bowl is “competitive trivia,” and the tournaments work as follows. First, 30-40 schools from around South Dakota meet together. Then, each school’s team is assigned a classroom and an opposing school to play. After six rounds, the number of correct questions are calculated and the winner is chosen. Aayush estimates that the team has participated in about eight meets and placed at about three. When the team placed in a high second at the January 20th competition, the team received a 2nd place trophy, and each member was awarded with a silver medal. If you are interested in learning more about this activity, practice is held every Wednesday during 4B! See Mrs. Jensen or a team member if you have questions.
