Powerlifting came out with a great start! This year a lot of girls and boys are determined to try something new, and this sport has been a good option for them. Last year boys were 1st place in State and girls were 2nd; some returning state champions are Learys Castello, Mackenzie Nguyen, Carter Dahl, and Jaden Robinson. We are excited for this year’s powerlifting.
Ms. Machacek, the girls coach, is described as someone who’s positive and very fun to be around with. She’s determined whenever it comes to coaching. She’s also encouraging, loveable, and makes you feel like you’re part of the team. Coach Cordell, the boys coach for powerlifting, is described as a caring coach. He cares deeply about all the athletes and wants to do what is best for them. He puts in a great effort to get to know each athlete. He is competitive and brings that to each meet, and it’s fun to see how excited he gets when an athlete gets a personal record.
When asked about her role as a coach, Ms. Machacek replied, “I really like it. It is another way for me to meet other students in the school, and it’s a very individualized sport and is very fun to encourage. I love it!”
Powerlifting is described as an individualized sport because you’re competing against yourself, and you’re setting records for yourself to reach. When at competitions, athletes compete against other athletes in their weight class which makes powerlifting a level playing field.
I asked Machacek how she feels now that a lot of girls and boys are joining powerlifting and how this sport has become a passion for them. “I feel we get a lot of newcomers every year, and we are growing every year and people also tell their friends to join and that’s good!”
Finally, when asked what advice she has to give, she stated, “To high schoolers, don’t be afraid to try new things in high school. One of the biggest reasons I am coaching powerlifting is because I regret not doing it in high school. To my athletes, trust yourself and trust your coaches. You are capable of a lot more than you think and your coaches see your potential.”
If you’re interested in going to a meet, the first meet of the season is on the 20th of December at 9am at Lincoln High School. In addition, Jefferson High School will be hosting the state championship meet in March. We hope to see you there cheering on this wonderful sport.
